Are You Ready for the Fall Election?
We’re talking about the 2008 MEAS Board elections, of course. MEAS is seeking nominations for a variety of open board positions this year. This is a great opportunity for alums to get involved and to develop (or improve) your leadership skills! Open positions include Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership Chair. Brief descriptions for each position are provided below. Elections will be held during our Fall Football Tailgate on September 6th 2008, and the term for each position is one year. If you’re interested in nominating yourself (or a fellow alum), please use the enclosed nomination form. If you have questions about any of the positions, please contact Rich Granger (MEAS Board President) at granger.9@osu.edu.
- Vice President –
Responsibilities include helping to recruit new members, developing
content for the annual newsletter, and assisting the board president with the annual report. This is
a great position for someone who is interested in becoming board president.
- Secretary – Responsibilities include recording notes at quarterly board meetings and distributing electronic copies of the notes to the board.
- Treasurer –
Responsibilities include writing checks for events/awards, monitoring
account balances, and filing an annual financial report.
- Membership Chair – Responsibilities include writing a letter for the annual membership drive, maintaining the MEAS membership database, and receiving and depositing membership dues.

MEAS Room to be Dedicated in Scott Lab
Thanks to numerous generous donations from
our members, MEAS
has completed our fundraising campaign to sponsor a room in the new
Scott
Laboratory building. With your
assistance, we exceeded our goal of $15,000 to sponsor the room, which
is
located on the first floor of Scott Lab in the student study area. We
will be
holding a dedication ceremony for the room during our Fall Football
Tailgate on
Saturday September 6th, where we will unveil a plaque that
will hang
outside the room recognizing the generous donors who supported our
fundraising
effort. Thanks for helping MEAS to
support the continued excellence of our mechanical engineering program!

Changes to Membership Drive in Progress
The Mechanical Engineering Alumni Society has
decided to transition to an annual membership drive! Operating an
annual membership drive, instead of quarterly, will allow us to more
easily track our membership. It will also allow us to establish an
annual budget – currently, our funds come in quarterly, so it is
difficult to predict our financial situation for upcoming quarters. An
annual membership drive will allow us to collect our dues (which
compromise the great majority of our budget) over summer and then plan
for the next year accordingly.
If your membership is set to expire sometime this year (but not summer)
don’t worry! We will be contacting you when your membership expires
with more information about renewing your membership in line with our
new annual membership drive.
If you have any questions about this transition, please don’t hesitate
to contact us!

More Than Your Usual Test Drive...
The good folks at the Transportation Research
Center (TRC) once
again hosted us for the annual MEAS TRC Day on May 10.
30 alumni and students got behind the wheel
to learn hands-on how Acura RSXs handle at the limits.
This year’s events included the slalom, ABS
braking vs. non ABS using threshold techniques, threshold braking
during
obstacle avoidance, over and under-steer handling in a skid car, and
hot laps
on a quarter mile oval. We had the
largest response ever this year, so unfortunately we had to turn many
students down. Remember that we hold this
event every year
and alumni take preference on the list. Watch
your e-mail next spring and RSVP as soon as you can.
We hope to see you there!
