FORMER ASTRONAUT KATHRYN SULLIVAN
TO LAND IN KNOX COUNTY
ON APRIL 22
Kathryn Sullivan, Ph.D, the first American woman to walk in space, will be speaking in Mount Vernon on Thursday, April 22. Our OSU Alumni Club is hosting her presentation, “THE WORLD WITH NO LIMITS” from 7 pm to 9 pm.

Join us at Dan Emmett Conference Center for this FREE event co-sponsored by the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County.

After leaving NASA, Dr. Sullivan served as President and CEO of COSI in Columbus, Ohio. She currently serves as Director for Ohio State University’s Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy and as a volunteer science advisor to COSI.

OSU BASEBALL OUTING

The club will be attending an OSU baseball game in May. Details to follow.

DIVERSITY GRANT

Our club has been awarded a grant from the OSU Alumni Association to develop a diversity program to be presented to Knox County high school students. Board member Sherry Altizer wrote the grant to show potential OSU students how the variety of Ohio State's classes, activities, and student body can have a positive effect on their college life and their adult life when they return to Knox County.
During the month of April, area students have been viewing a DVD that shows the many opportunities that OSU can provide, both in and out of class, on and off campus. Student essays will be turned in soon and judged with the top two in each high school receiving a cash award.

PRESIDENT CLUB TICKETS

Our fourth annual Scholarship Drive is well under way.
Help us provide scholarship money to three Knox County students attending OSU.
A contribution of $25 gives you the possible opportunity to purchase two tickets to one OSU home game for the 2010 season.
Contact any board member or officer to make you donation - which is tax deductible.

FOOTBALL TICKETS

We have received notice that our block of tickets
will be for the OSU vs. Miami of Florida game on September 11, 2010.
We have also requested a set tickets for an away game.
Watch for an e-mail with details of both games.

FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY

The Knox County Alumni Club participated in the county's 2009 food drive, Food for the Hungry.
On December 12th we drove the pick-up trucks to and from the grocery stores
to collect donations for Interchurch and the Salvation Army.
For the fifth consecutive year we also be donated items, OSU wreaths, to the local auctions.
These brought in more than $400 for the communities' food pantries .
Thanks to the many members who volunteered with these projects.

2nd ANNUAL BUCKEYE SPIRIT EVENT 2009
featured EARLE BRUCE
Former OSU coach EARLE BRUCE headlined our BUCKEYE SPIRIT EVENT October 13th.
Other guests included Brutus Buckeye and OSU cheerleaders, Buckeye Man, members of the OSU Men's Glee Club, and Buckeye legends Calvin Murray, Greg Frey, Jamie Skelton, Beth Howe, and others.

KNOX COUNTY RECEIVES AWARDS

At the recent Ohio State Alumni Association Leadership Conference, our Knox County Club received an OUTSTANDING CLUB Award. Past President Dave Daniels was also recognized as a BUCKEYE ALL-STAR. These awards demonstrate that the club's activities in the community and support of students through our scholarship program are being recognized.

Past and current presidents Dave Daniels and Karen Wise accept the club's award from Archie Griffin. Jan Schild and Brutus joined the party later.


PICNIC WITH THE POPS

The Knox County Alumni Club continues to check the Columbus Symphony web site to see if the OSU Marching Band will once again join with the Symphony for another great evening of music under the stars.
At this time, no guest artists have been announced, but the CSO calendar shows Picnic with the Pops concerts throughout the summer.
We will keep club members informed about this possible event.




In July OSU's President E. Gordon Gee, stopped in Knox County for breakfast with area legislators, alumni, benefactors, and representatives from the OSU Extension Office.
Club members enjoyed his wit and story-telling in addition to a delicious meal at the Red Fox Inn near Danville.

SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE
Chairman Audrey Spearman reports that the 2010 scholarship process is nearly complete. Her committee has conducted interviews with local high school seniors who will be attending OSU next fall, and also a few upperclassmen who are past recipients of our club's award. Two freshmen and one returning student will be announced soon as this year's scholarship winners. We are pleased and proud to be able to give out three $1000 awards.
