President's Message

1995 was a great year for our club!! We saw a lot of new faces at club gatherings last year. The success of our football team seemed to bring a number of terrific San Diego Buckeyes out of hybernation. A special welcome to all the new club members.

Some of our priorities for 1996 are :

We need your help! Our club gets better every year because of all the new volunteers stepping forward to coordinate club activities. As you can see from this newsletter, we're establishing some aggressive plans to make our club better and more responsive to your needs. Any donation of your time and talent helps us tremendously and is greatly appreciated. If you'd like to chair an committee or event or would like to participate on a commitee, please call the Buckeye Hotline and let us know. Thanks!

On behalf of our club officers and directors, we're wishing you much joy, happiness, peace, love and prosperity in 1996!! GO BUCKEYES!!

Gary Rectenwald

Student Recruitment Update

Angela Trivonovich ('90, Elementary Education) Recruitment and Scholarship Chair

Buckeyes Land Top San Diego County Running Back!!

Highly recruited Mike Wiley, a 6'0", 180 pound running back from Spring Valley has decided to play for OSU this fall. Mike rushed for 1,901 yards on just 193 carries in his senior year, an outstanding 9.8 yards per attempt. He scored 25 times and accounted for 2,721 all-purpose yards, while also making 63 tackles on defense.

"After watching Mike on film, I came away tremendously impressed with his acceleration and the way he finds the hole and bursts through it" says Tim Spencer, former Ohio State running back and San Diego Alumni Club member and now coach of Ohio State's running backs. Tim also says that "Mike just may be the most outstanding athlete on the entire Ohio State team next fall." Mike is also in outstanding shape academically with a 3.2 GPA and a 960 score on the SAT.

Mike visited Notre Dame, then visited the Buckeyes the weekend of January 5th and the rest is history. Mike told us "I had USC scheduled for a January 12th visit, but I didn't go. I had USC as the school I wanted to go to going into all of the recruiting, but I just decided I needed a change, and not just a little one, a dramatic one. When I went to Ohio State, I knew it was the school for me. I really liked Columbus, but the two most

important things were the education Ohio State can offer and Coach Spencer. Coach Spencer really seems to look out for his players. He said I would have a chance to come in and compete for a job right away, which is all you can ask for."

"I hung out at Ohio State with Stanley Jackson and Shawn Springs who are pretty funny guys. But I felt all the guys at Ohio State were great. Going far away from home doesn't bother me either. My dad even kind of wanted me to go to Ohio State. He was in the Navy with a relative of Anthony Gwinn, so he really likes Ohio State."

And Ohio State likes Mike!!!

Our alumni club will be inviting Mike to our upcoming events this spring and summer and we'll certainly be watching his progress at Moondoggies this fall! By the way, if anyone out there has a summer job opportunity for Mike, please call Gary Rectenwald at 454-4758 as soon as possible

Good Luck, Mike!

Wow! What A Deal!

We now have in place three ways you can purchase quality OSU related merchandise and benefit the local scholarship fun at the same time. We are very excited about these opportunities and hope you will take full advantage of these terrific offers.

Help Your Neighbor the "OSU" Way

Did you ever wonder what happened to that good old-fashioned Midwestern sense of community where everyone helped their neighbor? Well, now's your chance to help the OSU Alumni Club of San Diego find its community spirit.

In 1994, we enjoyed wrapping gifts at the SHARE BEAR project. That program, unfortunately, has been discontinued and we need to find a replacement. A few ideas have crossed our path but nothing that really fits our criteria perfectly. An ideal project would be a group activity requiring a

a small committment of time and minimal cost to participants.

Please contact Jera Ratliff at 689-9577 with any ideas you may have.

The Voice Of The Buckeyes!

We want to offer a VERY SPECIAL "Thank You" to Nate Dorsey, THE VOICE (hotline) of the Ohio State Alumni Club of San Diego. We're very appreciative of Nate's time and the tremendous creative talent, energy and enthusiasm he devotes to our club as he keeps us all up-to-date on upcoming club activities.

Thanks, Nate!!!!!

Help Us Establish A Home Page On The INTERNET!

In an effort to continue to improve club communications in 1996, we'd like to establish a presence on the INTERNET. We looking for a Buckeye with the skills to help us design a home page on the World Wide Web ... and ... we're looking for computer resources to establish our presence on the INTERNET. If you can help us in either of these ways, please call Gary Rectenwald at 454-4758 or Nate Dorsey at 689-9577.

Thanks!!

Hire a Buckeye!!

If you have a summer or fulltime job opportunity in your department or company, please let us know and we'll spread the word. We'd like to help current Ohio State students find

summer employment in San Diego County and we'd also like to give Ohio State grads living in San Diego County the opportunity to learn about job openings here.

If you have an opening, please call us on the Buckeye Hotline and we'll get right back to you. If you'd like to be aware of job opportunities, call the Buckeye Hotline and let us know that as well. Over time, we'll post these opportunities on our club Web page on the INTERNET - hopefully forthcoming later this year.
