Annual Reds-Padres Game

Come spend the evening with the Buckeyes at the "Q". The Cinncinati Reds will be playing the Padres on Wednesday June 10. The game time should be 7:35 PM. Before the game there will be a tailgate party in the parking lot. Tickets will cost around $15.00-17.00. Additional details will be available later.

The Cleveland Indians will be playing the Angels in April. The series starts on Friday the 3rd and runs through the 5th. We are considering a group trip up to Anaheim for the Sunday afternoon game on the 5th. Game time will be 1:05 PM. If you don't want to drive you can take the train. Amtrak has a station right next to the stadium. I will coordinate this trip if there is any interest. Presently I don't have any price information, but tickets should be around $15.00. Student Recruitment Update

The application process for new students has come to a close and we are waiting on the University to notify us of applicants' names from the San Diego area. Hopefully, we will have a larger group this year than in the recent past as we have made more contact with the local schools and College Fairs. However, it was a new experience for me and a learning experience also. We were able to make certain contacts and speak to people who are involved in the recruiting process here in the local high schools that will enable even more success next year. It is exciting to go to the College Fairs and represent the University and look at the enthusiasm from the students who are looking at all possibilities. Believe it or not, you cannot assume anything about what they may or may not know. One question was even asked, "Is Ohio State a Division I school?"

The student recruitment committee appreciates any and all help that volunteers can provide. Once we determine the names of local high school students who are prospective freshmen, we will need to call and encourage them to make the rightdecision. Sometimes, these contacts make the difference and help to persuade them. If you can help with these phone calls or personal contacts, please let me know by phone or e-mail. In addition, please remember that we need more help in the fall when it is time to contact the school's college counselor and the next upcoming class of seniors.

Web Update - Version 2.0 Coming Soon

Version 2.0 of the OSUSD Web Site web site isunder construction. Don't worry, all of the news, graphics and event information you use will be present in the new "web". The changes will bring a new look that is more appealing, consistent and easier to navigate. Also, technology advances will allow a new "multimedia experience". Keep visiting the site, the unveiling is expected to take place in early March.

As the site is being re-engineered, input from web users concerning content and presentation are appreciated. Do you know any good links that other club members should know about? Any ideas for content pages? Is there something un-cool about the site that should be changed? Send a message to the club account and your input will help design the page.

Internet e-mail allows for messages with the detail of a letter to be distributed to many readers with the speed of a phone call at little cost. Our club can use this medium to deliver information to e-mail enabled members. Do you know something others should know about right away? Send it toOSUSD and it will be forwarded to other club members. Want to be on the mail distribution list? Send a message and you can be added. Archie Griffin to Speak at 1998 Annual Meeting

Archie Griffin, Associate Director of Ohio State Athletics and only 2-time winner of college football’s Heisman Trophy, will be the featured speaker at this year's annual meeting to be held Tuesday evening, April 7th at the Hyatt Islandia Hotel. A reception will begin at 5:45 PM with the program following at 6:30 PM. The meeting should conclude by 8:00 PM. We will also view a videotape introduction of Ohio State's 12th President, William E. Kirwan (please see article in this newsletter).

The price for this year's event is $20 for members, $30 for non-members. The price includes snacks and hors d'oeuvres. A cash bar will also be available. There is free parking at the hotel. COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT " FACELIFT 100 "

Finally! We have a project into which we cansink our hearts and "muscles". Thanks to Barbara Levin, Team Leader, our club has located a great renovation program called Facelift 100 sponsored by the San Diego Neighborhood Housing Services. No talent is needed just a desire to help renovate a neighborhood by clearing debris, painting, covering graffitti, etc..

All the club has to do is supply at least 10 people who will be woking side by-side showing true Buckeye spirit! The date is Saturday, June 13th from 8-4...plenty of time to plan ahead! They supply a sign that denotes our club, breakfast and lunch, a t-shirt, a team photo and publicity for our local club! WOW! What a deal!

Election of Officers

An election of Club Officers for next year will be held at the Annual Meeting at 6:30 PM on April 7th. Anyone wishing to help the club by serving as an officer should call Jera Ratliff or the Buckeye Hotline at 685-2056. We will be electing a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Many other opportunities are available as committee chairpersons. Don't be shy. Give us a call and volunteer!

Moondoggies Contributes $1,000 to Local Scholarship Fund

Once again, Moondoggies has come through with a very generous contribution to our local scholarship fund. We have established an excellent partnership with this great sports bar. Moondoggies has always been very good to ourAlumni Club. We have always received priority treatment to watch Ohio State's football games and, in return, we have been loyal to Moondoggies. They always seem to find the "tough games" that aren't on local TV or local cable - most notably the Minnesota game this past football season. Because of our loyalty and patronage, Moondoggies once again has contributed generously to our local alumni club's scholarship fund. THANK YOU Moondoggies!!! We're looking forward to continuing this excellent relationship again this fall. See you in September!!!

Ohio State vs. San Diego State Men's Volleyball

The Ohio State Men's Volleyball team will meet San Diego State at 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 21 in Peterson Gym on the SDSU campus.

The nationally ranked Buckeyes of Coach Pete Hanson are heading west for their annual Spring Break trip to California, and this time they've included a stop in San Diego. All alumni and friends are invited to watch theBucks take on the Aztecs and meet the players and coaches at a special reception immediately following the match. Don't miss this opportunity to give our team a warm San Diego welcome and watch them compete in what promises to be an exciting contest between two volleyball powers.

The "Boat Parade of Lights"

Once again, on December 14, 1997, the boat parade proved to be a great finale to a year of Buckeye fun. Highlights of the evening included great food, visiting with good friends and an all new spectacular view of the parade, from the Sheraton. Around 40 members ventured out to Harbor Island this year to enjoy the tradition of "trimming" the yachts. The parade sailed just below our balcony giving all a spectacular view of the brightly decorated boats as The Buckeye Marching Band played in the background (compliments of Gary). It was a delightful evening and great chance to renew friendships and celebrate the joys of the holiday season. Make plans now to be there next year.

Southern CA OSU Alumni Golf Tournament

The first annual Ohio State University Legends golf tournament will be held at the prestigious Pelican Hills Golf Club in Newport Beach on Monday, April 6, 1998. The event is sponsored by the Ohio State Alumni Club of Orange County and benefits potential Ohio State students attending Ohio State from Southern California (including San Diego). Our alumni club is a co-sponsor of the event.

Great Buckeye athletes such as Archie Griffin, Coach Earl Bruce, Jim Houston, Paul Warfield and many others will be playing in the golf tournament. This premier event will bring Buckeyes business, athletics and academia together to meet and to network.

1998 Sugar Bowl Party

Our alumni club enjoyed watching the 1998 Sugar Bowl at the home of Gary Rectenwald. It was a potluck-style event and there was plenty of food and spirits for everyone. It was a great way to start out the New Year –with the exception of the final score, of course. Nevertheless, a great time was had by all.

William E. Kirwan Named 12th President of Ohio State

On January 5, 1998, the Ohio State University Board of Trustees appointed William E. Kirwan as the 12th President of Ohio State University. Kirwan was the unanimous choice of the 17-member search committee. He succeeds E. Gordon Gee, who resigned to become president of Brown University. His effective date will be July 1, 1998. His salary will be $275,000.

Kirwan, 59, has been president of the University of Maryland, College Park since 1989 and has served as a professor and administrator there for 34 years. As president of the University of Maryland, Kirwan has been widely recognized for his success in boosting academic standards, attracting quality faculty members, enhancing the student experience and making diversity an institutional goal. He is known for his commitment to fiscal responsibility and effective management and for his capacity to lead a large university. He is also known for his long-range vision and for his talent as a consensus builder.

Born April 14, 1938 in Louisville, Kentucky, William English Kirwan received his bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1960, and his master's and doctoral degrees from Rutgers in 1962 and 1964. He joined the University of Maryland as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1964 and, except for one year as a visiting lecturer at the University of London, has been there ever since. Dr. Kirwan and his wife,Patricia, have two children, both Maryland graduates. We hope to have Dr. Kirwan visit to us out here on the west coast within the next year.

Local Scholarship Fund Increases

There was a very good outcome from the Ohio State Vs Michigan game viewed at Moondoggies in PB last November in spite of the score. Our scholarship fund grew by over $700 due to the generous contributions and the enthusiastic purchasing of raffle tickets by attendees.

Twenty-six items such as dinners, handmade buckeye necklaces, flying lessons, a "Parade of Lights" excursion, a Nordstrom gift certificate, an Ohio Stadium cake, a Rose Bowl poster, two OSU cacti, and more were given at half-time to lucky ticket holders. Thanks to Keith Babcock, Ed Olander, Joyce Birchfield, Ken Holko, Judy Welty, George and Rebecca Lefebvre, College Traditions and Moondoggies for your donations. And thanks to the "Voice of the Hotline", Nate Dorsey, for being the best-ever raffle-master! This brings our scholarship total to (drum roll) $4500 plus interest!

Message From the President

Thank you all for your continued support of the Ohio State Alumni Club of San Diego this past calendar year!! It was great spending time with old friends and making many new Buckeye friends this past year!! To all the newcomers, welcome to San Diego and welcome to our club!!

The highlight of our year is that we were awarded our 5th straight "Outstanding Alumni Club Award" last September. Thank you to all of you who chair and participate in the club's events. We also appreciate your support of local student recruitment programs and your generous contributions to our local scholarship fund. These are the things that make a local alumni club truly outstanding.

I want to give a special thankyou to all the committee chairpersons who dedicate their time to make our club events exciting, memorable and fun. Beginning in March of this year, we have another full calendar of events scheduled. If you have any ideas for new events and/or you are willing to chair an event, please let us know. A wide variety of events is very important to the future success of our club.

Also, a million thanks to our club officers. Jera Ratliff, Susan Holko and Ted Reiff make many, many valuable contributions to our club. Their leadership is important and much appreciated. Also a hearty "Thanks" to Carol Evans and Betty Langer for all the wonderful candy "Buckeyes" that they bring to our football TV parties. Always yummy, the edible Buckeyes bring us all a little closer to Columbus on a football Saturday.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all participate in our events in 1998. Our big events this spring include a visit from the Ohio State men's volleyball team, a visit by the only two-time winner of college football's Heisman Trophy, Archie Griffin, and a trip to Anaheim to watch the Cleveland Indians. Lotsa Fun at the 1998 Super Bowl Party

The Ohio State Alumni Club once again watched this year’s Super Bowl at Dan Stone’s beautiful home in Cardiff – a great setting for any event – but especially nice for the Super Bowl. The crowd was split –some rooting for the Green Bay Packers and some rooting for the Denver Broncos. It felt a lot like the Reds-Padres game parties where our allegiances are split. At least we’re all unanimous in our love for Ohio State football! Thanks to Dan Stone and Vickie Stone for hosting another great party!
