Buckeyes For Bowsers-July 22
Keeping with our proud club tradition of community service,
such as Habitat for Humanity in past years, here is our chance as
a club to perform another Alumni community volunteer activity. Saturday,
July 22 at 8:30AM the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) needs volunteers
to assemble 6100 invitations for their annual black tie Funny Bone Ball
held in September. Please join us for an hour or two, for some fun
socializing and to contribute to this worthy cause.
CCI trains assistance dogs for the disabled. Most
likely there will be dogs in training, attending. Come see these amazing,
highly intelligent service canines. Paws can’t stuff envelopes so
they depend on us for that. Please share a Saturday morning and donate
some brief time to an organization that helps enrich the quality of others’
lives so much! Feel good by “giving back”. See you Saturday,
July 22 at the CCI center in Oceanside! Bring a snack if you desire.
Directions to the CCI center:
5 north to exit # 76 Oceanside
right approximately. 4 miles to Rancho del Oro Dr.
left on Rancho del Oro Dr.
an immediate right (unmarked street)
Member Directory
One of the club goals is to this year publish a membership
directory. Participation is voluntary. If you don’t check the box
on the membership form, you WILL be included in the directory.
As officers, we are regularly asked if there is an alumni
club directory. Often times members want to car pool to events together
and want to know what alumni live in their area. The directory will
also be handy for networking opportunities or to find a new dentist, financial
planner or doctor perhaps. The cost will be nominal simply to cover
the cost of printing and hopefully be available for sale by football season,
at Moondoggies.
Year in Review
by Vickie Stone
As dues are again due with this newsletter, I thought
it would be a good time to take a look at our past year as we prepare for
an even more exciting year to come.
Last season’s football performance left much to be desired
for most Buckeye football fans. But as faithful alumni, we know there
is much more to Ohio State than football. The bright side of no post
season bowl game for the team, was TBDBITL marching band director John
Woods being able to come to San Diego in December for our 1999 annual meeting.
Dr. Woods delighted us all with amazing stories and anecdotes of the marching
band’s history and legacies.
In January, the alumni club gathered in Cardiff by the
Sea for our annual Super Bowl party. And SUPER bowl it was with a
great, close game right down to the finish between two competitive teams,
BOTH with OSU alumni playing for them. So it wasn’t just about great
food and hilarious commercials for a change.
Dr. Joseph Alutto, Dean of the College of Business, was
our featured speaker at our annual meeting this year. Dr. Alutto’s
leadership abilities left no doubt as to why the $85 million fundraising
and building project was so successful!
March saw our Basketball Buckeyes faithful rooting on
our team at Moondoggies. The alumni club also had a successful alumni volunteer
meeting gaining new ideas and new blood which will greatly contribute to
our chances of being a “GOLD STAR” club again this year. The club
officers very much count on others’ enthusiasm and willingness to pitch-in,
to provide the quality of excellence our members have come to expect from
our club.
In June, the local alumni gathered at the Q to tailgate
only as true Buckeyes can tailgate. We witnessed the Padres victory over
the Reds, 8-5, AND we watched an awesome sky-show of post game fireworks
and pyrotechnic special effects. We have another baseball game/trip
planned again in August for an Indians-Angels game in Anaheim.
All in all, it’s been a fun and exciting ’99 -‘00.
The alumni club can look forward to membership year 2000-01 with great
anticipation – with great activities, football parties, Michigan bonfire
and even a football road trip in September to kick-off our football season.
You can keep informed via our web at www.osusandiego.com and Buckeye hotline
619-685-2056 for all the latest event happenings. Also, don’t forget
to send in your dues soon, to be eligible for all this fun!
Buckeye Alumni Get Lit Up!
Following a great tailgate party, our Padres jumped
on a slumping opponent Friday June 16, scoring five runs so quickly that
at least half of a record crowd wasn't yet there to see the barrage.
Fifty-three OSU alumni & friends joined over 60,700 baseball fans (the
largest in the major leagues this season) to see four Padres relievers
lock up an 8-5 victory over the Reds. The relievers -- Reyes, Whiteside,
Walker and Hoffman.
The Padres, who'd lost their five previous series openers,
paid back a nemesis in Reds starter Steve Parris, who defeated them with
six scoreless innings May 9 in Cincinnati. In spring camp, the Reds
were caught up in the euphoria of obtaining Ken Griffey Jr.
In addition to a Padre victory, OSU alumni were also
treated to a post-game fireworks and laser show. A local radio station
sponsored the fantastic sky show. It included a fireworks extravaganza-
30 minutes of fireworks best enjoyed with nifty 3-D goggles, simulcast
to music and video clips from Hollywood movie highlights, field pyrotechnics,
and special effects which included a baby grand piano exploding when it’s
candle abra blew up. A hearty THANK YOU to Ed Olander for coordinating
this great annual event.
Message from the President
1999-2000 has been yet another outstanding year for the
Ohio State Alumni Club of San Diego. Overall, we have increased the
number and variety of club events throughout the year. Member participation
in suggesting and planning events has also increased. Our club has
increased our visibility in the San Diego region through outstanding community
service activities. San Diego knows that “Ohio’s here.” Once
again, our club also significantly stepped up our student recruiting efforts
this year. Dave Fenner and his enthusiastic committee have raised
our outreach efforts and the results have soared to unprecedented levels.
We are very proud that our club has been named a “Gold Star” award winner
for the second time in the past 4 years. This designation is awarded
to the “TOP” alumni club in the country.
Many new Ohio State grads continue to move to San Diego
and we have added many new members this past year. Welcome to all
of our new members and thanks to all grads for continuing your membership
and supporting our club again this year.
Over the past year, we said “THANKS” to two very dedicated
club officers: Kim Best as our club secretary and Ted Reiff as our
treasurer. We thank them for their tireless efforts in supporting
our club over the years. At our December annual meeting, Vickie Stone
was elected as our new secretary and Jim Biddle was elected treasurer.
Both are full of enthusiasm and are working hard to make our club more
successful.
Our club's goals for 1999-2000 are to:
1. Significantly Increase the Local Scholarship Fund
2. Recruiting a Scholarship Fund Chairperson – Any volunteers?
3. Continue to increase Student Recruitment Activities and Results
4. Increase Membership
5. Increase San Diego Community Involvement
6. Be responsive to our membership
7. Get more people involved as committee members and increase participation
in club events
8. Recruit future alumni club leaders
In order to increase membership and participation
in club events, we’re again asking for your ideas for adding new and different
club events. We’re trying new things every year and we’d like
to continue to add events to our annual calendar. Your
input is greatly appreciated. !
Student Recruitment Update
Over the past year, The Ohio State Alumni Club of San
Diego again exceeded all previous efforts representing Ohio State to San
Diego high school juniors and seniors and counselors. The Student
Recruitment and Scholarship Committee was, once again, expanded to include
a core of 15 members and 8 occasional members. Our goal was to extend
our reach to all area high schools, to significantly expand relationships
with college counselors and to develop a repeatable process to reach any
San Diego student interested in attending Ohio State. We achieved
and exceeded each goal over the past year.
An extensive inventory of all public and private schools
and college counselors was updated expanding our reach to all area public
and private high schools. All of the 81 public high schools and 26
private schools were contacted. We provided information on Ohio State’s
academic programs and facilities - applications, brochures and scholarship
information was provided to each school. This was the most extensive
coordinated effort the club has ever made in its attempt to get the word
out to all San Diego high school students. The college counselors
enthusiastically welcomed the interest provided for the benefit of the
prospective college students.
The club was able to make personal presentations to groups
of students at the individual sites. One-hour presentations were
made to students and counselors at 40 selected schools. In
addition, 5 college night presentations were made to very large groups
in coordination with other schools or college fair presenters. The
club more than doubled the previous number of college fairs attended in
any academic year. Arrangements were made to become a regular
participant in these events on an annual basis. We attended a Big
Ten College Night for area high school juniors along with a representative
from the College of Admissions at OSU.
Activities conducted by the committee included regular
telephone calls of encouragement to all the prospective applicants.
A party was held last September for local freshman (and their parents)
prior to their departure for Columbus. We also established a committee
where a local alumni advocate (who graduated from Ohio State in each student’s
major) was assigned to each enrolled student - assisting them with career
advice throughout their undergraduate years and local job placements or
career contacts in their senior year.
Our efforts this year resulted in the largest number
of applications ever sent to Ohio State from San Diego County. Not
surprisingly, we also had the largest number of acceptances (12).
We are confident that our efforts will continue to result in even more
applications in future years. San Diego will send 4 freshmen to Ohio
State this fall. It is interesting to note that these students had
no prior affiliation with the State of Ohio before their visits.
They all fell in love with the campus, the quality of education and the
“Ohio hospitality” they received while they were in Columbus.
Our club has been given a unique opportunity to sell
copies of the 1999 halftime shows for Ohio State’s home games. These
tapes were professionally recorded solely for members of The Ohio State
Marching Band. If you are interested in receiving a copy, please
place your order on the enclosed membership form. Remember all proceeds
go towards our scholarship fund for a deserving San Diego County student.
Kosovo Family Update
On July 29, 1999, Gary Rectenwald, President of the Ohio
State Alumni Club of San Diego, adopted a Kosovo family comprised of 2
parents and 6 children (4 boys, 2 girls – ages 5 through 14). The
family continues to live in Gary’s home. Gary has resigned his job
and is now supporting this wonderful family full-time. On their June,
2000 report cards, all 6 children received all A’s and B’s in La Jolla
schools.
Gary welcomes the opportunity to speak to any individuals,
community groups or foundations who may have an interest in helping this
family. Activities might involve fundraisers (raffles, car washes,
etc.) or monetary contributions.
The issues, challenges and the joys of helping his new
“extended family” have been significant for Gary. Gary’s current
priorities are (a) continuing to provide for the family’s financial, physical
and psychological health needs, (b) recruiting mentors and tutors to help
with homework and (c) finding adequate transportation to shuttle around
a family of 8 people. Gary’s ultimate objective is to provide a new
home for the family.
If you would like to offer assistance in any of these
areas, please call Gary at
(858)454-4758 or email him at SDBUCKI@pacbell.net. Assistance,
in any form, would be greatly appreciated. All contributions are
tax-deductible.
Gary and the family will be featured in the upcoming
September issue of The Ohio State Alumni Magazine.
Local Scholarship Fund
One of our club's top objectives this year is to significantly
increase our contributions to our local scholarship fund. Our new
annual objective is $5,000. Our ultimate
goal is to have an Endowed Scholarship for a deserving San Diego County
student each year.
We need your help. There are many ways to contribute
to reaching our goal. A direct contribution to the fund is always
greatly appreciated. We’re also asking club members to consider making
an annual pledge of your age and/or a pledge for every point scored by
the Ohio State football team this fall.
As always, we will be conducting a BIG RAFFLE during
the Ohio State Vs Michigan football game at Moondoggies.
Proceeds from all events go directly to our scholarship
fund. To date, we've collected more than $3,000. To those who
have generously contributed in the past, we thank you!!
Our club is hoping a club member will volunteer to chair
our Scholarship Fund Committee. The objective of the committee is
to find creative ways to raise funds for our local scholarship fund.
Our club’s goal is to sponsor an endowed scholarship each year for deserving
San Diego County students. If interested, please contact Gary Rectenwald.
Check Out Our Web Site
Thanks to Don Zatyko, our club is gaining notoriety as
having an OUTSTANDING Alumni Club Web Site … check it out at:
On the website, you'll find a listing of upcoming club events,
our Buckeye hotline number, club resources, links to many areas of interest
around the University and about the University, including the football
team. For example, you'll find links to other
Ohio State Alumni Clubs, to The Ohio State University or you
can take a tour of the Ohio State campus. You can even read copies
of The Lantern or the Columbus Dispatch daily. There are also "Buckeye
Fanatic" sites like OZONE .
Thanks Don for your great leadership in creating this
wonderful resource for our club.
Get Involved!!
One of the key factors contributing to the success of
any alumni club is membership involvement in the planning and execution
of club events. This has been particularly true for our club.
If you have a little time to either lead or participate in the planning
of a club event, or if you're interested in becoming a club officer, please
check the appropriate boxes on the enclosed membership form. You'll
find the experience very worthwhile and your efforts will be greatly appreciated
by your fellow Buckeyes.
If you're a secondary high school teacher and would be
interested in helping our alumni club in our student recruitment efforts,
please contact Dave Fenner. It has been our experience that clubs
with significant involvement from the secondary high school teacher ranks
produce much greater results in their recruiting efforts. This is
especially true for out-of-state clubs.
Moondoggies Contributes $1,000 to Local Scholarship Fund
Many THANKS to Moondoggies for their generous contribution
of $1,000 to our local scholarship fund in December, 1999!!! Moondoggies
annual contribution is based on 20% of receipts from OSU Football TV parties
held each Saturday throughout the fall. Your attendance at our weekly
parties significantly helps our club reach its annual objective of $5,000
to our local scholarship fund. We look forward to seeing you every
Saturday this fall!! GO BUCKEYES!!
OSU Alumni Club of San Diego Does Great
Awarded “OUTSTANDING ALUMNI CLUB” 1993-1999!!
Gold Star “TOP CLUB” Award Winner 1996 &
1999
I Said DUES ... NOT Snooze!!
2000-01 MEMBERSHIP DUES are due by September 15, 2000.
Our membership year runs from September 1st thru August 31st. Your
dues will provide you a membership in “good standing” in THE most outstanding
alumni club for THE best school in the country! Once again, a FAMILY
membership (2 Ohio State grads) is $20 and a SINGLE Membership is $15.
Due to increasing costs, membership dues will increase by $5 effective
October 1, 2000.
(For those purchasing tickets to the Arizona game, membership
fees are due by August 5th.).
It is VERY sad to say that far too many of our local
alumni have attended our weekly TV parties and/or other club events and
have either forgotten or elected not to pay dues for the past few years.
Our local club membership dues are among the lowest in the country and
offer many benefits. We have not increased membership prices in over
10 years although costs have continued to increase (newsletter printing,
US mail, hotline, website, event costs, etc.). We have struggled
to “break even” for many years and your support is greatly appreciated.
For our fellow Buckeyes who are new to this truly “outstanding”
club (nominated and elected by our peer clubs), please take the time to
read this newsletter and see what we offer our members … there are many
wonderful variety of fellowship, networking and community events and we
always encourage new ideas and ways for our members to get involved at
any level. Your LOCAL alumni club has been elected THE MOST OUTSTANDING
alumni club “Gold Star” award winner
in 2 of the past 4 years (1996 and last year). Our club has been
nominated again this year (1999-2000), the award ceremony will be in early
September.
Your LOCAL Membership fees include: Quarterly Newsletters
sent ONLY to paid members; Discounts on event fees/tickets; PREFERRED ticket
status (like for BOWL Games, etc.); Discounts on T-shirts and sale items;
the Buckeye Hotline; and a WHOLE host of events sponsored by YOUR club!!
Remember, we are an affiliate organization and we are not THE National
OSU Alumni Association...where you receive the monthly magazine and support
the clubs at the national level. This is YOUR local club. and your chance
to make new friends and be the best Buckeye you can AWAY from O-HI-O!!!
(I think I just heard the chimes.)
The Buckeyes are Traveling To Tucson, Arizona … and So Are We!!!
That’s right, THE “boys of fall” will travel
to Tucson for their second game of the season on Saturday evening, September
9, and our club is planning a trip to cheer them on! The only catch
is: YOU NEED TO COMMIT NOW!!
Our club has secured 100 “game ticket packages” to the
game. A “game ticket package” includes a ticket to the game and to
the “Buckeye (Brunch) Pep Rally” preceding the game. The cost of
the ticket package is $75 per person.
In addition, our club had the foresight to reserve 40
rooms at the 2 Marriott Courtyards within 4 miles of the stadium last January.
There is a 2-night minimum at the hotels and the cost including the game
ticket package is $225 for single occupancy for BOTH Friday and Saturday
nights, and $300 ($150 per person) for double occupancy for the 2 nights.
Reservations and confirmations are “first come, first served” and FULL
payment must be received in full no later than Saturday, August 5th.
All tickets and hotel rooms will be released to long waiting lists after
that date.
The Orange County Alumni Club and the Ohio State Alumni
Pep Band will also be staying at one of our hotels and we are planning
a party on Friday evening. All Buckeyes are invited!
Personal TRAVEL is on your own. You could carpool,
“RV” it, fly or hitchhike (for real memory lane?)! You might want
to watch for “Friends Fly Free” promotions and other promotions on Southwest
Airlines. We would be happy to facilitate car pools. If interested,
please call Gary Rectenwald at (858) 454-4758.
Odds ‘N Ends.....Tickets and hotel reservation packages
will ONLY be sold to 2000-01 dues paying members (membership forms are
included in this newsletter). There will be NO late ticket or hotel
sales. If you cannot make the trip due to an emergency, we
regret that we cannot refund your $$ but we will try to put you in touch
with someone who missed their chance. However, these arrangements
are still YOUR responsibility.
Finally, we sure hope you can enjoy this great opportunity
to cheer your Buckeyes to victory while we boost the ‘ole scholarship fund
a bit. We have tried to make this a “hassle-free” trip for you and
will be keeping you updated with any changes (esp. related to the GAME
time, Friday night parties, etc.). GO BUCKS!!!!
Items For Sale
Hear ye...hear ye!! All Buckeyes step forward and pull
out your nickels and dimes cause these deals are great!! The following
items will be for sale in the fall during the Moondoggies football games
(members prices are listed in bold):
1. Club Members’ Directory - $1 / $3 (Avail. after
Oct. 10th and is available only to BUCKEYES! Will be a photocopied
assimilated booklet of membership forms).
2. T-shirts
with new San Diego logo (like website) - $10 / $15
3. College Traditions Program - anyone can order directly
from them and they refund 15% directly to our scholarship fund each year.
All you have to do is call them @ 1-800-628-4678 and tell them its for
San Diego Alumni Club or use the account #AL9524. New catalogs are
on the greeting table at each football game or they can forward an old
one to you.
Thanks to all of you who have participated in the past
as the amounts from these smaller items add up over time as we add them
to our scholarship fund.
A Polite Request For:
ATTENTION. Since our pleading and begging has not
appealed to many of you, we will try a different tactic this year and go
with simple specific requests. That’s right....just plain ‘ole asking
for exactly what is needed. No fluff … no guessing about what you
are committing to … So here goes:
These are the projects/tasks with which we need your
help … if you can make the time, would you please consider helping us in
one of these areas?
1. Our annual community event (see article in this
newsletter) on Sat. July 22nd for Canine Companions ... a brief investment
of your time and you animal lovers will feel great about this one!
We will be together, and gabbing, while we assist this noble cause. Contact
Vickie Stone per the article or call the Buckeye hotline and leave a message.
2. CHAIRPERSONS for the following committees:
· BACK TO THE BIG TEN - assists in planning and execution
with Big Ten Committee by representing OSU.....note this is from NOW until
September’s event. Contact Betty Langer via email at betty.langer@conexant.com
for additional info as she is “retiring” from this duty and a job WELL
DONE!
· THEATRE/ARTS - coordinates one theatre or other event
per year.
· STUDENT Recruitment - to be CO-chairperson this year
and to understudy the master himself, Dave Fenner. Dave will be retiring
and traveling across the U.S. next year and we have a year to learn all
his tricks. We are asking for a 2-year commitment.
· SCHOLARSHIP - still a much-needed position and we
are still seeking the divine individual to help us here. Is it you?
In advance, thank you for your consideration in these matters.
Any and all help is truly appreciated by your fellow Buckeyes. It
is the TRUE Buckeye lover that gives of him/herself to make this club the
responsive and outstanding club that it is!
Angles Vs Indians Baseball
If you missed the fun you can participate in our next
ballgame event when we road trip up to "The Ed" in Anaheim to see the Indians
take on the Angels. The game is Saturday August 26th. We will get the best
seats available for the best price. Deadline for ticket orders is
Monday July 24th. If you are interested contact Ed Olander 858-565-6056
or by E-Mail EOlan59@aol.com.
