First Annual Buckeye Bonfire
By Joyce Burchfield
A beautiful evening was the setting for the first annual OSU
Alumni Club bonfire, which was held on Friday, November 19th at De Anza
Cove on Mission Bay. The sunset was Spectacular!! As you Buckeyes
know, the night before the big home game with that team up north, our Buckeye
football team meets at the shoe for Senior tackle night and a big pep rally.
Afterwards, a big bon-fire is held over by St. John’s Arena. We didn’t
have a senior tackle at our San Diego bonfire but we sure had some good
food. Our small but mighty group enjoyed harmonizing OSU songs while
roasting our hot dogs, with all of the fixings; and what would a “weenie
roast” be without smores. YUM-YUM!! If you missed the first
annual Buckeye Bonfire, don’t miss out on the second one, which will be
held on Friday, November 17, 2000.
Back To The Big Ten Party
By Joyce Burchfield
The 15th annual “Back To The Big Ten Party” was held at Characters
Bar and Grill at the La Jolla Marriott on Thursday September 23, 1999.
This year the Master of Ceremonies was Jim Laslavic, who is the Sports
Director of NBC 7/39 Television. Jim even did both sports broadcasts
live from the party with the Penn State Alumni in the background for the
first segment and Michigan Alumni for the 2nd broadcast. Jim is a
Penn State graduate and a former San Diego Charger. Ohio State had
a fair showing (not as many Buckeyes as last year) but I do believe that
team up north had the most. Come on Buckeyes, we need your support
for next year’s party! The buffet this year included B.B.Q Beef,
Chicken, Green Beans, Rice Pilaf, Caesar Salad, Garden Vegetables, Pasta,
Assorted Breads and a Dessert Station. Great door prizes were provided
by each Big Ten Alumni Club with our very own Joyce Burchfield winning
a $25.00 Gift Certificate to the Gordon Biersch Brewery.
The Big Ten party is a great way to wear your school colors and
to celebrate the kickoff of the Big Ten Football season. Hope to
see you at the next Big Ten Party, which will be held in September.
Buckeye Business Excellence Demonstrated
By Vickie Stone
At our 2000 Annual Meeting, attendees heard an impressive delivery
April 8th at the Windsock Grill, overlooking the San Diego airport, by
Joseph Alutto, Dean of the Max. M. Fisher College of Business. You
don’t need to be a business grad like myself, to have been incredibly impressed
by the results Joe Alutto has achieved for OSU’s business college. Due
to his success since 1991, in 1998 Joe was named Executive Dean for the
Professional Colleges at Ohio State, coordinating the activities of seven
different colleges.
Dr. Alutto outlined how the OSU Business College has been transformed
from crumbling old’ Hagerty Hall, to a state of the art, 6 building campus
complex that will eventually include an on-site 151 room Hotel. When first
involved in this monstrous vision in 1994, Alutto was instrumental in raising
the bar, by looking at the Business College’s competition and aiming to
have the new buildings provide what the campus would need in 5 years when
they were completed in 1999. Attendees heard how campus administrators
had their eyes opened as to what was possible at a public institution.
The creation of a 390,000 square foot, fully integrated business campus
was no small feat, as one can imagine.
Dean Alutto surprised the audience when he informed us that OSU
colleges do not have budgets, they have “expenditure authorizations”.
Alutto set a precedent by outlining how the Business College would be run
as a business. Leaders would have accountabilities. Revenue
generated by the college would be tracked. Joe knew he would have
the challenging task of changing they way some OSU leaders thought.
He needed to first change the financial approach and recapitalize.
An example of this was the result of a survey question that business students
needed much more hands-on computer skills. Student fees were
increased to provide a half million-dollar computer lab. Yet uniquely,
Joe had OSU borrow the money so the equipment would be available right
away and students could benefit immediately.
The university thought Joe was unrealistic when he requested
permission to set a goal of raising $90 million for the capital campaign.
The university approved $38 million. By the second year the campaign had
raised $65 million and by May 2000, it will have raised $97 million.
The Business College now limits students accepted and attendance is down
from 4800 to 2100 undergraduates, providing for a higher quality education.
Also, the student/teacher ratio is higher with a full time faculty of 75-80%.
Gone are the days of 20% faculty with TA’s doing most of the teaching?
Forbes nationally ranked two MBA programs, based on a rate of
return (OSU’s is 3.3 years). What were the two? OSU and Harvard. Joe said
that the degree should be MBL not MBA. Masters in Business Leadership.
Since after all, its leadership skills that earn the premium pay.
Which, by the way, for MBA grads last year was $88k average, with a $21k
sign-on bonus. The 1999 US News and World Report ranked OSU’s overall
undergraduate program 16th best in the nation. The finance and real
estate programs placed in the top ten.
Joe told the audience that when a visitor sees the new business
complex for the first time, the typical reaction is, “ I can’t believe
this is Ohio State”. After hearing Joe’s passion for excellence,
we in San Diego believe! Thanks Joe for this display of Buckeye excellence
and extending the frontiers for management education into the new millennium.
Basketball Recap
The Buckeyes fell to Miami in the second round of the NCAA Tournament
(75-62) and ended their 2000 record at 23-7 overall and 13-3 in the Conference
standings. Ohio State claimed a share of the 2000 Big Ten regular-season
championship, its first title since 1992. The Buckeyes were led by All-Big
Ten honoree and Third-Team All-American Scoonie Penn. Penn ranked
sixth in the Conference in points per game (15.6 ppg), third in steals
(2.20), fourth in assists (4.33) and fifth in three-pointers (2.17).
Michael Redd also was a First-Team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches
and a second-teamer by the media. Redd finished fourth in the League
in scoring with a 17.3 ppg average. Ken Johnson, the 2000 Big Ten
Defensive Player of the Year, is second on the OSU list in blocks.
He also set the Big Ten single-season record with 90 in League play.
OSU’s trip to the NCAA Tournament marked its 21st appearance and fifth
showing in the ‘90s. Ohio State had the best defense in the Conference
as it allowed its opponents to shooting just 38 percent from the field.
Behind Johnson, OSU also was tops in the League in blocked shots (6.67).
Buckeye Thank You to Our Volunteers!!!
Saturday March 4th proved to have 2 Buckeye victories. One the basketball
team (beat Minnesota 82 to 72) and two the San Diego OSU Alumni club took
our first step toward a great 2000. We would like recognize the following
members who have indicated a willingness to help out with club events by
volunteering to do everything from organizing events to calling members
to pass on event information. No matter how small the task we the
members of your OSU Alumni club send a big Thank You to: Jon & Julie
Enochs, Joyce Burchfield, Andrew Patron, Wendi Ried, Brett Zumfelde, Ed
Olander, Amy & Pete Friedli
The club still needs a Scholarship Chair to help think of ideas
for increasing the funds in the scholarship account, and a Community Chair
to help oversee ideas where alumni can give back to the San Diego community
Thanks again for all of your participation and involvement. We,
the club officers, look forward to getting to know you better and working
with you all!
Club Finances
The OSU Alumni Club of San Diego currently has nearly $10,000 in assets.
$7,000 of this is set-aside in a Scholarship/Endowment account to benefit
Ohio State students from San Diego. The Club sponsors "endowed funds"
which means that none of the principal is spent, only the earnings on the
principal is used for scholarships. Ultimately, the club would like
to build this endowment to $100,000, which
would allow the club to offer a full annual scholarship. Full financial
reports are always available to any member. Contact the club treasurer
for more information.
A Super, Super-Bowl Party
By Vickie Stone
Some 25 OSU alumni enjoyed a good time January 30, gathering
at Eagle’s View, Dan Stone’s home above the San Elijo lagoon in Cardiff
by the Sea, for the annual OSU Super Bowl Party. Enjoying yummy subs,
jumbo shrimps, Caesar salad, and of course chocolate buckeyes, we welcomed
kicking-off the new Millennium’s alumni activities! To the delight
of everyone in attendance, we actually had a reason to watch the game this
year and not just the commercials.
As the game first started we wondered if we’d have to settle
for a game of field goals. The Rams lead the game 16-0 initially, but then
the Tennessee Titans tied the game by scoring on three straight drives.
Steve McNair and OSU’s own Eddie George helped engineer the attempt at
a Tennessee comeback. The exciting climax of the game was of course, the
play that had Mike Jones tackling Kevin Dyson at the 1 yard line as Kevin
stretched and reached to get the ball over the goal line attempting a first
ever Super Bowl overtime. It was not to be. Dyson was left
sprawled on the ground in Jones’ arms, stretching the ball toward the goal
line in vain as the clock turned to zeros.
St Louis Rams quarterback, Kurt Warner, passed for a Super Bowl
record 414 yards and was voted MVP. A Cinderella story of a guy going
from stocking grocery store shelves to playing in the Super Bowl.
Also, it was nice to see Coach Vermeil after being out of football for
14 years, getting so emotional over his teams’ victory.
Everyone was amazed at the number of “dot com” commercials.
Costing millions per 30-second spot, we wondered if anyone would even remember
the next day, what web sites they saw advertised. From this author’s
opinion my favorite ad was EDS’ “Cat Herders”, an expensive 60 second spoof
on cow herding, only done with thousands of cats! Hysterical and memorable.
See you all in 2001 for the next S-Bowl.
Football Finale Brunch & Raffle a Success
(Unfortunately Not So, For Buckeyes)
By Vickie Stone
Though the spirit of our first Bonfire at the Bay carried over
from the Friday night before, to Saturday’s game day festivities, our Buckeyes
weren’t up to the challenge. They ended their roller coaster season
with a 6-6 record and a 24-17 loss to the “team up north” on November 20.
The Buckeyes had control of the game at Michigan until three turnovers
and a failed field goal in the second half took their toll. This
game against the Wolverines seemed to somewhat sum up the Buckeye’s season.
Not since 1971 had the Bucks lost their last three games, and not since
1988 (Cooper’s first Buckeye season) had OSU not gone to a post season
bowl game. (This however, became a plus for San Diego alumni since we then
had the privilege of hearing Marching Band commando, Dr Jon Woods, speak
at our December meeting! - see related article, this issue)
Moondoggies’ as usual, outdid themselves with a superb brunch.
The bar was decorated with Buckeye memorabilia for a festive welcome for
the football fans. The pre-game raffle netted over $400 for the scholarship
fund. A few of the raffle’s special prizes were the fragrant scarlet
Hawaiian lei’s donated by Dave Smith, our club’s part-time Hawaiian, part-time
San Diego resident.
At half time, Moondoggies’ General Manager, Brett Miller, presented
President Gary and Vice President Jera a check for a $1000 donation, a
percentage of the proceeds from our alumni club members meeting at Moondoggies,
throughout the football season. These funds will contribute toward
our club’s goal of establishing an endowed scholarship fund, for local
students to attend OSU.
Well, here’s to looking forward to 2000’s football season and
as San Diego hometown OSU senior tailback, Michael Wiley stated, “Hopefully
this will be the only bad year we have for the next 20 years.”
Student Recruiting for OSU
By David Fenner
This year’s class of high school seniors in the San Diego area have
been exposed to Buckeye Alumni recruiters like never before. We had
our largest group of volunteers ever out to the college fairs, high schools,
campus visits and mailings to whoever would listen! Our results truly won’t
be known until fall when classes start, but, right now we have at least
12 local students accepted for next school year. One of those 12
has applied for an Alumni Association scholarship as she hoped to attend
“the #1 rated Pharmacy program in the country”. A lot of hard work
and volunteer time has been extended this school year and we are beginning
to see the results as more and more students hear about the greatness of
The Ohio State University. We would really like to acknowledge the
hard work of all those who have helped, a little or a lot, it has really
come together as a good recruiting team. Special thanks to our veteran
Bob Bates of Solana Beach who visited most of the schools on the list and
he was joined this year by Roger Musgrave, who did a superb job!
And those of you who can, please help us next fall to visit the schools,
or attend a college fair and hand out materials. Thanks much to Jera,
Ed, Mark B., Jim, Debra, Shelley and all.
Local Recruits Shine
Michael Wiley has maintained the tradition of great Ohio State running
backs by being selected in the 5th round by the Dallas Cowboys of the recent
NFL Draft. The Cowboys are intending to use Michael both as a 3rd-down
running back and as a 4th wide receiver on certain downs.
Michael was contacted in earlier rounds by the New York Giants
and San Francisco 49’ers regarding his interest in being drafted as a defensive
back. Michael politely declined. Michael is excited and very
comfortable with his legal and financial agents.
Michael is 2 quarters short of earning his degree from Ohio State.
He intends to complete his degree in early 2001.
Michael sends along his very best wishes and thanks to our club
for the support we’ve provided to him over the past 4 years. His
parents, Eddie and Felecia, also express their sincere thanks. We
all wish Michael a very long and successful career in the NFL. We’re
looking forward to his (hopefully many) visits here to play the Chargers
over the next several years.
Mary Hofer, one of our earlier recruits, a sophomore now from
Monte Vista high in Spring Valley was a walk-on for the Synchronized swimming
team and was a big hit winning a trio gold medal at the 2000 U.S. Collegiate
Synchronized Swimming Championships helping Ohio State re-claim the team
championship.
Trip To Arizona Game In September
The Ohio State Alumni Club of San Diego is planning a trip to Tucson,
Arizona to attend the September 9, 2000 game against the Arizona Wildcats.
Our club will make hotel reservations for all those desiring to spend both
Friday and Saturday nights in Tucson. We have also ordered tickets
from both Ohio State and the University of Arizona to ensure we are able
to satisfy our local demand for tickets.
More details to follow in the July, 2000 newsletter. Stay
tuned!!
For your information, this trip to the “west coast” will be the
first of 3 consecutive trips for the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes will
travel to Rose Bowl to play UCLA in September, 2001 and to San Diego to
play San Diego State at the “Q” in September, 2002.
1999 Annual Meeting Huge Success!!
By any measure, our 1999 Annual Meeting, featuring Dr. Jon Woods,
Director of the Ohio State Marching Band, was a tremendous success!!
Dr. Woods captivated a large audience with many stories about the band
dating back to 1974 when he first became an assistant director of the band.
Dr. Woods also brought a videotape with the 1999 pre-game and half-time
shows. Dr. Woods supplied a copy of the video, usually only available
to band members, to Gary Rectenwald. Gary spent 8 years in the Ohio
State Marching Band. His last two years were Dr. Woods’ first two
years with the band and they shared many interesting stories throughout
the meeting.
A hearty Buckeye THANK YOU goes
out to Judy Welty for providing a very comfortable venue for the meeting.
Judy’s tireless work and organization contributed significantly toward
the success of this meeting. THANK YOU Judy!
With Dr. Woods’ permission, Gary is willing to make professional
copies of the video tape and sell them to members this fall – proceeds
will benefit our local scholarship fund. Order forms will be included
in the July, 2000 newsletter.
Dr. Woods will be bringing a pep band back to San Diego when
Ohio State plays San Diego State at the “Q” in September, 2002.
Message from the President
Thank you all for your participation in Alumni Club events and for
your strong support of our alumni club!! For the 2nd time in 4 years,
our club was awarded the national association’s “Gold Star” award which
designates the top alumni club in the country. The tremendous leadership
and tireless efforts we receive from our club officers, our committee and
event chairmen and our many, many volunteers have resulted in this great
distinction!
I am especially proud of our process and efforts toward student
recruiting. Many of San Diego county high school students have already
been accepted to Ohio State this fall quarter. Many, many thanks
to Dave Fenner and his tremendous team for, once again, preaching the “Ohio
State” message across more than 200 high schools in the County.
Two new club officers were elected at our annual December meeting:
Vickie Stone (Secretary) and Jim Biddle (Treasurer). Both Vickie
and Jim have been strong supporters of our club for many, many years and
we welcome their enthusiasm and talent to our club leadership.
Many new Ohio State grads continue to move to San Diego and we
have added many new members this past year. Welcome to all of our
new members and thanks to all grads for continuing your membership and
supporting our club again this year.
Since the last newsletter, we’ve conducted our 1999 Annual Meeting
(in December, 1999) and our 2000 Annual Meeting (in March, 2000).
Our speakers from Ohio State were absolutely outstanding and these meetings
were a tremendous success. A special thanks to Judy Welty and Jim
Biddle for coordinating these meetings.
We are all getting excited about the (football) Buckeyes’ upcoming
visit to Tucson on September 9th. Our club is planning a trip with
details to follow. Please see the article in this newsletter for
more information.
The June 16th Padres game against Ken Griffey and the Cincinnati
Reds is already a sell-out. Ed Olander had the foresight to secure
50 tickets to this game for our annual club event. Tickets are available
first come, first served. Please look for article in this newsletter.
Our club's goals for 1999-2000 are to:
-
Significantly increase Local Scholarship Fund. We need a Scholarship
Chairperson!

Kosovo Family Update
Many club members have been asking the status of the family that
Gary Rectenwald adopted last July. The family of 8 has been living
with Gary for more than 9 months and all family members have been making
excellent progress in their adjustment to the American lifestyle.
Gary’s goals for the family have been to provide a safe and supportive
environment for all family members, to purchase a new van for the family,
to find productive employment for the mother and father and to raise enough
money to purchase a new home for the family. The first three goals
have been accomplished. The father is now working at the University
of San Diego and the mother is working at UCSD. Gary is continuing
his leave of absence in his professional career to work on his fundraising
activities. Progress has been very slow but it is moving in a positive
direction. If you have any fundraising ideas (car washes, etc.) and
know of any people who are willing to help, please contact Gary Rectenwald.
Gary is coaching 2 of the boys’ baseball teams – the first baseball
experience for these boys. The children are all attending La Jolla
schools and are doing remarkably well.
Meet Your 2000 Club Officers
James E. Biddle, Treasurer,
James received his bachelor's degree in business administration from
The Ohio State University in 1964 and a degree in operations research/systems
analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1971. He served nine
years as a U.S. Naval Officer with two tours of duty in South Vietnam and
currently resides in Chula Vista, California. James is the owner,
President, and Chief Executive Officer of The Securities Center, Inc.,
a NASD broker/dealer in Chula Vista. He is a Registered Securities
Principal, Government Securities Principal, Municipal Securities Principal,
Financial and Operations Principal and holds life and disability insurance
and variable contract licenses, with a total of 26 years in the industry.
He is currently the Chairman of the Board of the California Association
of Independent Broker/Dealers, Inc. Before owning The Securities
Center he served in senior management capacities with two major national
brokerage firms (now called Linsco/Private Ledger Financial Services and
Titan/Value Equities Corp.). In 1978 he was President of the San
Diego Chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning,
Inc. (IAFP). During 1979-1982 he served on the national board of
director's of the IAFP. He also served three years on the national
screening committee for the Registry of Financial Planning Practitioners.
James has been active in a wide range of civic activities in the San Diego
area including having been President of: the Chula Vista Jaycees, Chula
Vista Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Chula Vista. Until
1994 he served several years as a director of Pacific Commerce Bank.
He also is currently serving on several committees of the Vista Hill Foundation.
Vickie Stone, Secretary,
Vickie grew up in Columbus attending Northland High School. Majoring
in Human Resources Management, Vickie received her Bachelors of Science
degree in Business Administration in August 1985 and after a trip to Europe
and the holidays bought a one way ticket to California in January 1986.
At her graduation ceremony at St John's Arena she had a huge helium balloon
that said "California or Bust". Vickie says she always felt drawn
to the West Coast, maybe due to listening to too many Beach Boy songs.
She has been active in the San Diego Alumni Club since 1987. A big
thrill for Vickie was after 12 years in California, finally making it to
the Rose Bowl, seeing the Rose Parade and watching the Bucks beat Arizona
in 1997. Vickie is a Human Resources Consultant and has recently
been riding the high-tech boom in San Diego by recruiting for various companies
in town the past 5 years. This is her first year as an officer for
the alumni club.
Jera Ratliff, Vice President,
Jera grew up in Lewisburg, Ohio (population. 2500....less than
Taylor Tower her freshman year!). She graduated from OSU in 1984
with a B.S. in Physical Therapy. Jera participated in many activities
while at OSU but her fondest memories include being an accompanist for
the OSU Men's Glee Club and celebrating at "Surf City" after passing her
exams for PT school! Now, she finds herself still "practicing" her
art of physical therapy in an outpatient setting in Rancho Bernardo specializing
in treating complex orthopedic /pain patients and developing a new women's
health program. Her free time is usually spent with "Luke", a huge
"teddy-bear-of a Rottweiler" (he HATES wolverines!) hiking and cheering
for those Buckeyes.
Gary Rectenwald, President,
Gary has been our club president since 1991. Gary was awarded
the "Best Buckeye" award in 1994 by the Ohio State Alumni Association.
Under Gary’s leadership the club has been awarded 6 "Outstanding Alumni
Club" awards and 2 "Gold Star" awards - awarded to the top alumni club
in the country. Gary graduated from Ohio State four times with a
bachelors degree in mathematics and physics and masters degrees in mathematics,
computer science and an
M.B.A. in finance and marketing. . Gary set an Ohio State record
by spending 8 years in the Ohio State Marching Band - 6 of those years
included trips to the Rose Bowl. After leaving Ohio State in 1978,
Gary enjoyed a 16 year career with IBM. Gary retired as General Manager
of IBM in 1994 so that he could remain in San Diego. In July of 1999,
Gary adopted a family of 8, including 6 children, from Kosovo. Gary
is now semi-retired and is providing for his new family - who continue
to live in his home in La Jolla. Gary spends most of his time volunteering
for church activities, coaching baseball, helping with homework and fundraising
for the family.
