OSU Alumni Club of San DiegoNewsletterAugust, 1996 Vol 3 Num 4Ohio State Academic Departments Rank HighDid you know that US News and World Report ranks The Ohio State University 16th among national public universities and 36th among public and private universities? In addition, the Ohio State Fisher College of Business ranks 16th among all business programs and 11th among public business schools. The MBA program was ranked 25th among all programs in the nation. This makes the Fisher College one of only ten colleges with both graduate and undergraduate programs ranked in the top 25. Also, the Real Estate program in the Fisher College was ranked 2nd in the country! Obviously, we have alot to be proud of by attending The Ohio State University! ALUMNI GET INSIDER INFO AT ANNUAL MEETING!The sixty San Diego OSU Alumni Club members and guests who attended the Annual Meeting May 19th at Charley Brown's on Harbor Island were rewarded with more than a sparkling afternoon and a champagne brunch on San Diego Bay. Bringing greetings from Columbus were Bill Hilton, Director of Development of the Alumni House and Kathy Pond, V.P. of Field Operations for the Ohio State Alumni Association. Kathy reassured those of us who have job offers in Uganda and Hong Kong that there are now Alumni groups in operation there. President Gee has even gone to visit, just to make sure! Featured speaker, Bill Conley, Ohio State football coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Buckeyes, and long-time San Diegan and former Charger Tim Spencer, who has coached OSU's running backs for the past two years, gave a vivid description of the drama involved in OSU football recruiting. Tim , MVP when OSU appeared here in the 1982 Holiday Bowl, was modestly embarrassed but allowed us to see his "Highlight Tape". He also discussed coaching his most famous athlete to date: Heisman Trophy Winner, Eddie George. (He also revealed a well-guarded secret: Eddie didn't really need much coaching!) Most recently Tim was actively involved in recruiting Michael Wiley, from Monte Vista High School who was one of the top running backs in California. Michael is now practicing with the team. Bill Conley's description of the recruiting process made us all even more proud of those who choose to become Buckeyes. Films of recruits are usually first seen when the recruits are high school juniors. Weekly phone calls from coaches, then the Head Coach, topped by one from President Gee at the "right time" eases the process along. But the crowning moment may occur in Ohio Stadium, in the middle of winter, when the recruit and his parents stand on the fifty yard line hearing the "Buckeye Battle Cry" and gaze up at the scoreboard big-screen to see the recruit's picture in an OSU uniform!! No wonder we recruited one of the top 3 classes in the nation in the spring of '96. Bill reviewed the line-up for this year and we're looking forward to a terrific season, once again, with all the defense returning. Both coaches thanked our club for inviting them and said they'd like to return every year. Special thanks and kudos go to Judy Welty who planned and coordinated the meeting. It truly was an outstanding event. Buckeye Band In Major Motion PictureThe Ohio State Marching Band squad leaders were in Los Angeles in April to shoot the opening scene of a major motion picture anticipated to be released this fall. The picture is titled "My Fellow Americans" and stars Jack Lemmon, Dan Ackroyd, Lauren Bacall and James Garner. The scene takes place in an "Ohio" ballroom where Jack Lemmon accepts his election as President of the United States. Dan Ackroyd is his Vice President and Lauren Bacall plays Jack's wife in the picture. Gary Rectenwald hosted the band for 3 days in Los Angeles and took them on a tour of the city and was able to coordinate a special tour of the Rose Bowl press box for the bandsmen. The bandsmen all enjoy standing at the 50-year yard line and singing "Carmen Ohio" as well. Who knows? Perhaps their trip was an omen for December of 1996? Buckeye Basketball Coming to San Diego!!The Ohio State men's basketball team will be coming to Southern. California for the holidays (hopefully about the same time our football team will be arriving here for the Rose Bowl). The basketball team will be playing at USC on December 21, 1996 and at San Diego State University on December 23, 1996. We are planning to support our team locally on December 23, 1996, including a "welcome reception". You will be able to purchase tickets from our club. Details are not yet available. Please call the Buckeye Hotline (685-2056) or Ed Olander (565-6056) later this fall for more details. Republican Convention Comes to San DiegoOur alumni club supported the Ohio Delegation at the Republican Convention at two parties on August 12 and 15, 1996. Gary Rectenwald, our club president, was contacted by the Ohio Secretary of State's office. Gary was asked to put together an Ohio-friendly band for a "Buckeye Tailgate" party on August 12th and a "Jazz Band" on August 15th. Several Buckeye bandsmen traveled at their own expenses from Columbus to participate with the band. Music was provided by the Ohio State Marching Band and Coyle's Music in Columbus. Regardless of party affiliation, Gary tells us that it was fun partying with fellow Buckeyes once again in San Diego. The club received a hearty "THANKS" from Governor Voinovich and Secretary of State Taft for our efforts. Cincinnati Bengals Come to TownOn September 8th the San Diego Chargers will be playing the Cincinnati Bengals at Jack Murphy Stadium at 1:00 p.m. If you're interested in attending the game with your fellow "San Diego Buckeyes", please call Rick Krahenbuhl at 755-5097 (H) or 929-3112 (W). WWW Site Hopes & PlansWe're still planning to put together a World-Wide Web site for our club sometime this fall. We're hoping to be able to fund this venture from club membership proceeds. So PLEASE join our club. We're excited about having a presence on the INTERNET. If you're able to volunteer some of your "Website development talent" to this venture, please call Gary Rectenwald at 454-4758. Reds / Indians Come to Southern CaliforniaOn Tuesday, June 11th, our local Buckeye alumni members packed into a luxury box at Jack Murphy Stadium to watch the Reds play the Padres. Unlimited food and beverages were included in the package but, as usual, the culinary "HIT" was Betty Langer's chocolate-covered Buckeyes! The Reds won the game. The Buckeye crowd was pretty evenly split on which team they were rooting for. Everyone had a great time!! Our trip to Anaheim on August 13th allowed us to do what most people in Ohio can't do, see the AL Campaign Cleveland Indians play baseball live. A group of our Buckeye alumni joined up with a group of Orange County Buckeyes to watch the Tribe play the Angels. Before the game, there was a get-together at the National Sports Grill near the stadium. Unfortunately, the Indians lost the game ("bad calls by the ump") but it was still a fun evening. We intend to repeat these two events every year. We'll try to schedule weekend games in 1997. The two events raised $180 for our local scholarship fund. A special Buckeye thanks to (Lt.) Ed Olander for coordinating both events - THANKS Ed! Call for MembersYes, you know the drill...report with your fellow Buckeyes to the best local Alumni Club in the west! It is the football season but you don't have to only be interested in sports to participate in this club. We have worked hard to bring a variety of activities to our members and an unlimited number of benefits. However, IF you still are an OSU Football Fan you will want to remember the date..September 30th. Do you hear me? SEPTEMBER 30!!! That will be the cut off date to postmark your membership application so that it will be eligible in the lottery for Rose Bowl tickets. In years past we have given significant latitude in this date, but it makes it much simpler if you just send it in NOW and leave the rest to us. Also different from last year will be the membership card. We tried it once but have decided not to make a repeat performance for several reasons. This does not mean that you still won't benefit from many money-saving opportunities by being a dues-paying member such as discounts on club events (usually $3-5 per person per event) and 10% discount on OSU merchandise at The Aztec Shop. Of course, ONLY local dues-paying members will receive the quarterly newsletter that is our lifeline for events, be eligible for special events such as the Rose Bowl ticket lottery, and be able to share in the true Buckeye spirit that has rebuilt this club to one of the finest in the nation! Please do not confuse your local membership with that of the OSU Alumni Association in Columbus. Although we share goals and a unified philosophy for Ohio State we are certainly separate organizations. And one last thought...anyone out there who is interested in helping with club events, has ideas or magical skills PLEASE do not hesitate to step forward and claim YOUR club and get involved. Just leave a message on the Hotline directly and we'll be glad to have you aboard. Remember this is your club and the more Buckeye Brains we have the better we will be! WOW! What A Deal!We now have in place three ways you can purchase quality OSU-related merchandise and benefit the local scholarship fund at the same time. We are very excited about these opportunities and hope you will take full advantage of these terrific offers. The Buckeye Sports Bulletin provides the hottest sports information year-round with 30 issues including weekly publications during the football season. The price you pay is the normal subscription rate of $45/year for 2nd-class delivery or $74/year for first-class mail. However, $15 of either subscription fee will be returned to our club and deposited in our Scholarship Endowment fund. Call 1-800-760-2862 (24 hours/7 days) to order. PLEASE tell them you are a member of the Ohio State Alumni Club of San Diego. Those of you who already subscribe, please remember to state your affiliation to our club when you renew your subscription each year! College Traditions (located next to the Varsity Club on Lane Avenue) has generously offered to donate 15% from all sales to San Diego club members back to the club. THANK YOU, ANGELA!At this joyous time for Scott Cain and Angela Trivonovich, it is with sadness that we who have come to know and love them must say, "Good-bye". Scott will be finishing his Ph.D. at UCSD this fall and they will be relocating to their new life wherever that may lead them. Angela first became involved with our club when Gary started the reorganization and we embarked on our first major project by welcoming the OSU Men's Glee Club to San Diego in June 1992. I knew she was a "lively one" the first time we talked and she couldn't wait to get involved. Get involved she did! Since then she (and Scott) have teamed up to take care of club t-shirt sales, represent our club in the planning and running the "Back to the Big Ten" event, and serve as our club's Scholarship and Recruitment Chairperson. Her enthusiasm never failed and we "unofficially" considered her one of our best "cheerleaders". Thank you, Angela and Scott, for your devotion to this club and all your hard work. You have helped build something of which we can all be proud. We wish you only the best as you move forward and hope that wherever you move you can continue to wear those great bermuda shorts and flash those great tans! We will miss you both. San Diego Buckeyes Excel in Columbus (and Atlanta)"Hello from Atlanta!" writes Emily Marsh, an upcoming senior at Ohio State this fall. Emily is an Ohio State scholar-athlete in synchronized swimming and was chosen to be an alternate on the U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming team this summer. The team won straight "10"s and the Gold Medal at the summer Olympics. The Buckeye team placed 2nd in the U.S. National Championships last year. Emily hails from Spring Valley. Also on a positive note, Lisa Bostian from Vista has an athletic scholarship to Ohio State and plays on the women's Volleyball team Annual "Back to the Big Ten" party set for September 26th!The annual Back to the Big Ten "tailgate" party will be Thursday, September 26. This year the party is being held at Sports City, the new cafe & brewery located in La Jolla Village Square. The master of ceremonies is Jim Laslavic, local sportscaster on KNSD and a Big Ten alumnus from Penn State. The evening is set to start at 5:30 and go until closing. You may already know, that Jim did the nightly updates from the Olympics for KNSD this summer. We're sure he'll have some very interesting perspectives of the Olympics, the Chargers and Big Ten Football. There are prizes for best school colors outfit, and to the alumni club that has the most people in attendance. For the past three years, Ohio State has won the prize for highest attendance; let's try to keep our winning streak going. If you have not already received a flyer about the Back to the Big Ten, and are interested in attending, call Angela Trivonovich at 558-5945. President's MessageWow! What a great spring and summer for our club!! This year's Annual Meeting was our best ever. We had perfect weather (what else is new?), a great venue and 4 enthusiastic speakers. As usual, our "Ohio State Night At The Murph" was well-attended with Cincinnati winning this year's ballgame. Our first annual trip to Anaheim to watch the Angels and Indians was also a success. This fall promises to be very exciting for our club. We'll be returning to Moondoggies in Pacific Beach for our football TV parties. We'll also be trying to set up a reception with the Ohio State men's basketball team at our first annual "Parade of Lights" party on December 22nd. Our annual theatre party with "CATS" also promises to be a lot of fun. And, of course, there's Chargers and Buckeye football from September through (hopefully) January! We're delighted that Susan Holko is our new club secretary and that Carl Best has volunteered his time and talent to assemble our quarterly newsletters. Thanks and welcome to both Susan and Carl!!! Great Buckeyes!! See you all at Moondoggies this fall! Go Bucks!! First Annual Holiday "Parade of Lights" ReceptionWe will be hosting a wine and cheese reception to observe the 1996 Holiday "Parade of Lights" on the Bay on December 22, 1996. The "Parade of Lights" features boats of all shapes and sizes decorated in Holiday Colors parading on the Bay. We will have a great view from a suite balcony at the Holiday Inn On the Bay on Harbor Drive. Please call the "Buckeye Hotline" or Ted Reiff (232-5323) for details. Buckeye Football Returns to MoondoggiesWe're excited to be returning to Moondoggies in 1996 for more Buckeye Football. The atmosphere and food provided by Moondoggies in 1995 was outstanding. Through the cooperation of Moondoggies management, we were able to watch all 12 Buckeye Football games last year. We're very hopeful to be able to watch the first 11 games from Moondoggies this year and to watch our team live at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena! Once again, Moondoggies will offer us a 20% discount for food purchased on football Saturdays. However, this year Moondoggies will bill each of us at the menu price with 20% of our proceeds going to our local Scholarship Fund. As you may recall from prior newsletters, one of our prime objectives as an Alumni Club is to provide an endowed scholarship to a deserving San Diego County student, preferably a National Merit Scholar. We have been falling short of our goal; we felt this weekly contribution would significantly help us reach our goal. We hope you agree! See you at Moondoggies on September 7th!! Chairpersons Needed For Key Committee AssignmentsThank you to Angela Trivonovich who has chaired our Student Recruitment and Scholarship Fund efforts over the past several years. Angela has done a terrific job leading these committees since 1992 and we're very appreciative of her efforts. Our club is seeking two people to chair these very critical committees for our club. If interested, please call Gary Rectenwald at 454-4758. Joseph Collins Wins First Club Alumni Scholar AwardJoseph N.
