Retired U.S. Navy Commander John Sarao, associate director of the University of South Florida's Joint Military Leadership Center, was the featured speaker at the May luncheon at the Military Officers Association of Sarasota.

Established in 2004, the Joint Military Leadership Center is the nation's first and only learning center and that educates, trains and prepares future armed forces officers to serve in, conduct and lead successful military operations in a joint environment.

Following his remarks, Sarao assisted Military Officers Association of Sarasota President John O'Brien in presenting $1,500 association scholarships to seven high school seniors.

JROTC scholarship recipients were: Jacqueline Byrd, Riverview High School, who plans to attend the University of North Florida; David Skarphol, Booker High School, attending the University of Tampa; Benjamin LeBoutillier, Sarasota Military Academy, attending the University of Florida; and Peyton Hodges, Sarasota Military Academy, attending Ohio State University.

The Ohio State University Sarasota-Manatee Florida Alumni Club brings together alumni and friends of Ohio State to promote the University, to enjoy fellowship together, to assist students from Florida interested in attending Ohio State, to provide hospitality for groups and individuals from Ohio State who are visiting the Sarasota area and to serve the community. Working through its officers and committees the Club organizes a series of programs for its members each year, recruits new students, raises scholarships funds for students from Sarasota or Manatee County attending Ohio State and provides service to its community.

The Buckeye Sportsmanship Creed

On game days, we come down with scarlet fever.
We sing the fight song loud and proud.
We believe every O-H deserves an I-O.
We support all of our athletes and teams.

We follow the "scarlet rules."
We treat our guests as we wish to be treated.
We cheer for a good play and respect the other team.

We're gracious in victory and defeat.

Athletics brings out the best in all of us.

When the dust has cleared…

And the final whistle has blown,

The spirit is maintained…

The pride is there…

With or without the victory bell,

Ohio State has the…

Best Fans in the Land.
