Scholarship Opportunities:
SWFL Scholarship Fund-
The Alumni Club of Southwest Florida is excited to have the opportunity to assist local area high school graduates with Ohio State University tuition through the Southwest Florida Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established in December, 1996, with a gift to The Ohio State University Development Fund from the Alumni Club of Southwest Florida, alumni, and friends.
All gifts are to be invested in the University’s Permanent Endowment Fund, under the rules and regulations adopted by the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University, with the right to invest and reinvest as occasion dictates.
The annual income shall be used to provide academic merit scholarships to students graduating from area high schools with preference for students qualified under the criteria of the Alumni Scholars Program, interviewed, ranked, and recommended by the Alumni Club of Southwest Florida. Final selection will be made by the University Committee on Student Financial Aid.
Alumni Scholars Program
The purpose of the Alumni Scholars Program (ASP) is to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding incoming freshmen. Each year since 1979, The Ohio State University’s Office of Development has provided funding for the Alumni Scholars Program scholarship awards. Constituted alumni clubs select and recommend talented incoming freshmen for this merit-based scholarship. Clubs that participate may award one $600 scholarship for every 2,000 alumni (or portion thereof) living in their county or club area. The scholarship money may be used to attend any of Ohio State’s campuses. Who is eligible? The Office of Student Financial Aid selects a recipient(s) based on club recommendations.
To receive the ASP award, students must:
• Be admitted to the university
• Rank in the top 25 percent of his or her high school class (preferably the top 10 percent)
·Be recommended by school principals, counselors, and/or teachers based on scholastic ability and character
·Have a record of performance in activities both in school and in the community
·Impress the club’s scholarship committee during the personal interview by demonstrating a sound interest and positive attitude toward college
• Be a resident or attend high school in Southwest Florida
- Apply by the deadline of March 1st prior to the Freshman year
Current Scholarship Awards (2010-11 school year)
We are pleased to announce that your alumni club has awarded scholarships to another outstanding student from Lee County. This year, Chelsea Torres from Cape Coral High School is the recipient of a $4,400 scholarship from our Club and the $600 Alumni Scholars Program awarded by the university at our direction. Chelsea and her family have expressed much gratitude to the entire club for its generosity; noting that these awards play a big factor in helping Chelsea attend Ohio State.
Chelsea graduated 2nd in a class of 326 seniors at Cape Coral High School and completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. While in high school she was involved in every honor society there was to offer including those for French and Art. In addition she held the office of secretary in both the National Honor Society and the Student Government Association. Despite the demands of the IB program and maintaining exceptional grades, Chelsea also participated in varsity swimming and soccer throughout her four years of high school. She volunteered at Cape Coral Hospital, received honors for her work with Girl Scouts of America and has given of her time and talents as a tutor.
Chelsea plans to major in the field a Biology as she has a strong interest in becoming a Doctor. We wish her much success!
