OUTSTANDING CIVIL ENGINEERING ALUMNI AWARD FOR 2007

Each year we seek to recognize one or more of our civil engineering graduates who have contributed to our profession in accordance with criteria established by our alumni Board of Governors:

* Advancement of knowledge in the field of civil engineering

* Exercise of civil engineering expertise for the benefit of the general public

* Demonstrated excellence in the teaching of civil engineering

* Achievements in the practice of civil engineering which contribute to the recognition of the civil engineering profession

 

This year we have presented this award to two recipients.

DAVID A. EDWARDS

Dave graduated from The Ohio State University in 1951. He worked in the family business, The J. T. Edwards Steel Company, part time for numerous years prior to being hired full time as a Detailer in the Engineering Department. He spent seven years in Detailing and held numerous positions with the last being Supervisor of Miscellaneous Metal Division. He obtained his Professional Engineering license in Ohio in 1957. He spent the next two years assisting Mr. Russell Wenger in production. Upon Mr. Wenger's retirement in 1960, Dave was promoted to Plant Superintendent in charge of facilities and fabrication of all structural, ornamental and miscellaneous metals for the J. T. Edwards Steel Company. He was promoted to Executive Vice President of Operations in 1970.

In addition to his responsibilities with the J. T. Edwards Company he became President of a newly formed family business holding company, Edwards Industries in the late 1970s with his two brothers, J. T. Edwards, Jr. and Peter Edwards. The three brothers managed several companies which included Multicon Communities, Duffy Homes, Edwards Insulation Company, Edwards Land Company, Buy Ohio Realty, Ross Willoughby and F. A. Kohler. Dave retired from both the steel business and Edwards Industries in 1993.

THOMAS E. CROLEY

Thomas E. Croley received hi Bachelor of Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1969, and then his Masters (in hydrology) in 1970. In 1972, he received his Ph.D from Colorado State University.

He began an academic career in hydrology and water resources at the University of Iowa, where he did research and teaching until 1980, at which time he joined the U. S. Department of Commerce as a Research Hydrologist with the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he presently flaunts his Buckeye intellect among the envious University of Michigan folks.

Tom spent one year as a Visiting Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury, Christshurch, and Fulbright-Hays Senior Research Fellow, Lincoln College, Canterbury, New Zealand in 1979-1980.

He also was a Visiting Research Scientist for the Soviet Geophysical Committee at the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow in 1990.

He has been a consultant to numerous organizations and universities throughout the United States, and has received research grants from many entities in the U. S.

Tom's committee memberships encompass national and international organizations, and his professional affiliations include:

* ASCE, where he has been Associate Editor for the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering

* International Association of Hydraulic Research

* American Geophysical Union

* American Meteorological Society

* International Association for Great Lakes Research

* American Association for the Advancement of Science

Tom is a member of Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering Honorary.
