Ohio State "Best Damn Band In The Land" Marching Band
Carmen Ohio

Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise,
And songs to Alma Mater raise;
While our hearts rebounding thrill,
With joy which death alone can still.
Summer's heat and winter's cold,
The seasons pass, the years will roll;
Time and change will surely show
How firm thy friendship... O-HI-O!

Buckeye Battle Cry

Hang On Sloopy

Hey! Cheer

Fight The Team

Richard Heine at "The Bash" Pep Rally

Music Arranger Emeritus: Richard Heine

Now retired and living in Bradenton Florida, Richard Heine has composed and arranged music for The Ohio State University Marching Band since his student days during the 1930's.

More than any other person, he is responsible for the unique sound of this all brass Marching Band. In addition to many original compositions, Mr. Heine arranged most of the Ohio State school songs (Buckeye Battle Cry, Fight The Team Across The Field, I Want To Go Back To Ohio State, Chimes & Carmen Ohio, Beautiful Ohio, Le Regiment, and others) and those arrangements are still in use by the band today.

Ohio State has some of the most recognized school songs in the country. Played at every football game during the fall quarter, there is hardly a student on the campus who would not know the words to at least one of them. The following is a list of the some of the more prominent school songs on the Ohio State campus.

Buckeye Battle Cry
Fight the Team
Chimes and Carmen Ohio
Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse
Hang On Sloopy

Chimes, first arranged by Director Jack Evans and Arranger Richard Heine, was inspired by the chimes in Orton Hall. It was introduced by the Ohio State Marching Band in 1955. Immediately the bell tones created by the Marching Band were a hit among fans. Today, Chimes is played as an introduction to the school's alma mater, Carmen Ohio.
Carmen Ohio was originally composed by Fred Cornell and was set to the melody of Spanish Hymn. Written during one of the football team's saddest hours (a 86-0 loss to M*ch*g*n), Cornell, then a member of the team, wrote the words on the back of an envelope during the long train ride back to Columbus. First performed by the Men's Glee Club in 1903, it did not become popular until the words were published in the Lantern for the football rally before the M*ch*g*n game of 1906. It formally became the alma mater in 1916. There are three stanzas, but generally only the first is sung.

Carmen Ohio

Oh! Come let's sing Ohio's praise,
And songs to Alma Mater raise;
While our hearts rebounding thrill,
With joy which death alone can still.
Summer's heat and Winter's cold,
The season pass, the years will roll;
Time and change will surely show
How firm thy friendship -- O hi o.

These jolly days of priceless worth,
By far the gladdest days of earth,
Soon will pass and we not know
How dearly we love Ohio.
We should strive to keep thy name
Of fair repute and spotless fame;
So, in college halls we'll grow
To love thee better -- O hi o

Though age may dim our mem'ry's store,
We'll think of happy days of yore,
True to friend and frank to foe,
As sturdy sons of O hi o.
If on seas of care we roll,
'Neath blackened sky, o'er barren shoal,
Thoughts of thee bid darkness go,
Dear Alma Mater -- O hi o.
